ABOUT KANDY, SRI LANKA
It’s less than a 3 hour journey and around 110 km away from the Bandaranaike international airport.
Not only is it the second largest city in the country, Kandy is popular for its fascinating history, culture and old-world charm. It’s famous for the temple of the tooth , known as the Sri Dalada Maligawa, the Peradeniya botanical gardens, The Peradeniya University and of course its overall location in Sri Lanka.
Of course you can! Visit the main train station in Colombo (Fort) and purchase your ticket. You can even purchase your ticket online. The trains to Kandy are quite frequent and runs daily. You have the option of traveling first class or second, and the train will take you to Kandy in 2.5 hours. Choose to end your journey either in “Kandy” or “Peradeniya” depending on your hotel stay. If you are staying with us at Amaya Hills, Kandy, then we advise you to arrange your pick up from “Peradeniya” which takes you to the hotel in under 10 minutes.
Kandy is beautiful all year round. However, if you do want to take advantage of the best weather conditions, then January – April would be the ideal time for you. It’s mostly rain free but slightly warmer and it’s ideal for your botanical garden strolls and sightseeing adventures.
The nightlife in Kandy is rather laid-back, however you do have some lovely bars and restaurants in and around the Kandy town. Amaya Hills houses the most popular nightclub Le Garage where the weekends are exciting along with the Dumbara Bar, the resort’s rooftop bar with some stunning views and cocktails.
The Esala Perahera is usually held in July or August annually to pay homage to the sacred Tooth Relic of lord Buddha. It definitely is a must see if you are in Sri Lanka and Amaya Hills offers some fantastic rates along with a shuttle service to take you to the Perahera and back.
